Only slightly more than a year later I found the answer to how lime would do in the recipe for a leg of lamb as substitute to lemon: excellent 
But then again I usually prefer lime due to it’s slightly mellower taste so maybe I’m biased …
Just a couple of months later my plans on catching up with blogging turned out to be somewhat ambitious and didn’t yield a lot of results. So what am I doing now actually writing a post? The answer is I was asked to (who would have thought it was that easy). 
To be fair it was a rather reserved case of sounding out whether I was still posting recipes, which in connection with the lasagne we were eating at the time for me translated to “Can I have the recipe please?”
Without further ado I proudly present: spinach lasagne (vegetarian)
Returning from a nice if somewhat windblown walk during lunch break I found myself craving a cream tea, which reminded me of our last visit of Peacock’s Tearoom where I had lunch followed by a scone with clotted cream and strawberry preserve I’m very fond of that memory as we just took the time on a day off to drive to Ely to have lunch there.
Having said that another experience just came back. When we were last visiting Edinburgh we went to this cosy tearoom right after visiting the Palace of Holyroodhouse to sate my hunger for a cream tea and they had shockingly run out of scones! I was asked if I wanted to give the rock cake a try instead as they are similar. I agreed to the experiment and discovered that rock cakes look somewhat rocky, taste like fruit scones and are bigger than scones In Sally’s words: “Hmmmmm, scrumptious!”
Well, here I am over one and a half years after my last posting. Although I made it farther than three, dare I say, articles I eventually stopped writing. So what about all the exciting stuff that happened in the meantime? My best excuse is probably that I was too busy enjoying it and didn’t have enough time to write about it
Or I could just admit to being lazy, but where is the fun in that?
Yesterday we headed to Ely for another exploration. This time we started from the east. After parking in Cresswells Lane we made our way to the Great Ouse and explored Ely’s riverside marking potential food sources along the way.
Peacock’s Tearoom looked particularly inviting. Besides I had heard just that week that they got an award as Britain’s top tearoom 2007. My peeked curiosity and my love for cream tea demanded immediate testing, which turned up brilliant results. Their good reputation is well earned: good and friendly service in a nice setting and delicious tea and food.
Thus braced we made our way through the park, around the cathedral and back to the car concluding a nice walk.
With good friday coming up and my husband requesting a fish dish the all important question of whether Maasdamer can be replaced by Cheddar was thrust upon me.
After some contemplation of the matter and based on my experiences with different kinds of Cheddar I decided to determine the answer by rigorous testing. Read the rest of this entry »
Considering that I really like lamb, and cooking for that matter, it’s really surprising that I never made a leg of lamb myself. Then again we only had to visit my sister in law and request one and her husband Harry would prepare a feast – and wouldn’t even let me help. Except maybe tasting the wine
While having one of those strange discussions on IRC that start with something random (like bones of sheep in Kullervo) and then go off on a tangent we talked about lamb and how to prepare it. There was a clear consent that lamb and garlic are a dreamteam, but I actually found my claim that rosemary had to be included disputed! Last night it snowed and this morning the world was powdered like a waffle with icing sugar. And it kept snowing so we actually had a whopping inch or even two. Other regions got a bit more snow causing some havoc along the way.
This was actually the first time it snowed for more than five minutes (and stayed on the ground instead of melting at once) since I moved to England and I got a culture shock. Nearly all schools closed in preparation for the teachers not being able to make it to work. A railway company got praised on the radio for the novel idea of running empty trains troughout the night to keep the tracks clear. And the incompetence some people were showing while trying to make it to work was unbelievable.
Sure, nobody here has snow tyres as you really don’t need them for the once every few years occurence of snow. But even unpracticed (regarding snow) drivers should grasp the concept that it isn’t actually feasible to turn a corner without accelerating at all. Not even snow is that slippery
Today we spent an awesome day in London After getting delicious lunch on Borough Market (I’m a real sucker for the Raclette) we saw the musical We Will Rock You in the Dominion Theatre, which was a blast!
My husband got me the tickets for my birthday and we had great seats in the first row. The show was great and the music … well it’s Queen, so what do you think? It’s an entertaining, funny and somewhat worrying story incorporating most of my favourite Queen songs. Did I mention the british flavoured homour? And that we’ll probably go and see it again?
When the storm wrecked havoc with wide parts of europe yesterday we were pretty lucky, ’cause it only flattened a part of our garden fence and carried away our recycling bin. The fence will be easily fixed and we already recovered a bin (ours wasn’t the only one scattered along the street).
